Pleistocene Ngorngoro

Description

Technically this is a Pliocene scene from East Africa. A group of Australopithecines are taking advantage of an opportunity to scavange a giant warthog that has been mired in mud. The savanna would be recognizable today, but there were faunal elements that are now extinct such as the giant antlered giraffe Libytherium, the elephant cousin Deinotherium and giant species of baboons that were much larger than the hominids.

At this time Ngorngoro was not a crater, it was still an immense shield volcano like Kilimajaro. It had yet to explode.
