Hoplophoeneus was an apex predator during the Oligocene of North America. It belonged to an ancient group of aeluroid carnivores that closely resembled cats but were not true cats. It would have been about the size of a lynx. Hoplophoeneus was a saber-toothed hunter with extremely long canines. It was so specialized that it developed scabbard-like flanges on its mandible to protect the upper canines from breakage.

This specimen is on display at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
