Additional expeditions into paleobotany can be seen in my DA "Paleo & Sci Illo" gallery:

This is a carbon fossil of an Eocene ginko leaf found near Smithers, British Columbia. It is 50 million years old. It is displayed at the Burke Museum in Seattle. Ginkos represent one of the most primitive forms of broad leafed plants. Nearly identical fossils are found in Cretaceous deposits. The genus still lives largely unchanged in modern Asia. It may be considered to be a "living fossil".

Oddly enough, the whit nuts inside the fruits are delicious. It's kind of like black walnut seed, which has a nasty slimy bitter toxic outside of yellow goop that turns black if you let it. Either way, it'll kill every other plant around if you leave it on the ground. And the nut inside is delicioius.
