The eruption 7,700 years ago of the former Mount Mazama created Crater Lake, Oregon and deposited volcanic ash across thousands of square kilometers of North America. The closer to the epicenter, the deeper the deposits. Near Crater Lake the ash is hundreds of meters deep. Natural erosion has cut down into the ash producing these dramatic canyon lands. Hydrothermal vents beneath the ash are responsible for the distinctive spires.
